Breaking Barriers and Building a Career in the BPO Sector

Hailing from a conservative lower middle-class family in Ratua Block, Malda District, West Bengal, Priya Kumar’s early life was marked by traditional values and financial constraints. Her father, a seasonal mango vendor at the Malda bazar, and her homemaker mother, held deep reservations about women working outside their homes—especially in metropolitan cities. The family’s rigid outlook posed a significant barrier to Priya’s ambitions.

Yet, Priya was not one to conform. From an early age, she nurtured a desire to carve an unconventional path for herself—one that defied societal norms and familial expectations.

Priya’s journey took a decisive turn when she attended a mobilization camp conducted by Bandhan’s Skill Development Program in the Ratua Block area. Inspired by the potential to gain industry-relevant skills and the opportunity to work in the booming customer service sector, she enrolled in the ITes-BPO trade offered under the program.

A graduate with a strong resolve to shape her future differently, Priya saw the training not just as a course, but as a launchpad for her aspirations. She frequently engaged with her trainer, seeking clarity on job opportunities outside her hometown—particularly in Kolkata, where she dreamt of starting her career.

Understanding the importance of English communication in customer service roles, Priya put in focused effort during the 90-day training program to improve her language proficiency. Her dedication was evident, as she consistently showed up with questions, participated in mock interviews, and practiced her speaking skills with peers and trainers alike.

The Bandhan Skill Development curriculum not only equipped her with technical skills but also instilled in her a newfound confidence and professionalism.

Upon completing her training in July 2024, Priya secured her first job with Teleperformance BPO in Salt Lake Sector V, Kolkata, earning a monthly salary of ₹15,000. For a young woman from rural Bengal, this was not just a job—it was a breakthrough.

Despite initial resistance from her parents regarding relocation, Priya’s determination prevailed. She moved to Kolkata and began living in a rented accommodation, taking complete charge of her life and career.

Her performance at Teleperformance spoke for itself. Within six months, she transitioned to a better opportunity at Globiva BPO, receiving a salary hike to ₹19,000 along with additional benefits. Today, Priya is an independent, confident, and accomplished young professional, serving as a role model for other girls in her community.

From the mango fields of Malda to the corporate floors of Kolkata, Priya’s story is a testament to what determination, the right guidance, and timely opportunity can achieve.
